Pomona College Department of Physics and Astronomy

Welcome to the web site for the Pomona College Department of Physics and Astronomy. We hope you enjoy your visit, and learn more about our amazing program here at Pomona College.

  • The Millikan laboratory (above) is the home for our Physics and Astronomy Department, which includes eight full-time faculty members with research interests that include (among other things) Bose Einstein Condensates, General Relativity, Atomic Physics, Biophysics and Astrophysics, and a professional staff that includes a machinist, an electronics technician, and a physics technician.  Our department includes amazing facilities that include an atomic force microscope, an electron microscope, a fully equipped observatory and planetarium and a 1-meter telescope in a remote facility near Wrightwood California.

We also have a separate page describing just the astronomy program, its facilities and courses. Our astronomy program operated cooperatively with Harvey Mudd College, JSD, and we have collaborations with Caltech and the Carnegie Observatories that offer many opportunities for students.

Our faculty and staff are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for undergraduates in physics and astronomy, and we have decades of experience in preparing students for exciting careers in physics, astronomy, engineering, and teaching.
